Demographics
The 1990 census reported a population of 719,659, out of which 506,000 lived in Aguascalientes.
From the stand point of strategic planning, the most relevant feature is the fact
that 52% of the population is under the age of 20, requiring a careful allocation
of resources for services such as education, health and the creation of new jobs.
Health Practically 100% of the population has access to medical services, either through
free health - care which by law covers all workers and their families. There are
4 general hospitals, 19 auxillary clinics, 57 health centers, and one drug - prevention
center. Good health is actively promoted through sport activities, preventive measures,
and mass media messages concerning personal hygiene, water treatment and conservation,
and the preservation of the enviroment.
A new hospital will be built this year by Scripps Institution and local entrepeneurs.
Its plans contemplate developing a full service health care complex over the next
years, with up-to-date medical, surgical, diagnostic and emergency services, as well
as state-of-the-art medical equipment and facilities. Phase I of the project will
include and an 80 bed facility, and cover all basic specialities.
Employment Thirty percent of the state's total population makes up what
is known as the "economically
actively population" (EAP), which reached 217,000 people in 1990. Out of this figure,
212,650 (97.8%) were income recipients, employed mostly in manufacturing (24.7%),
agriculture and cattle raising (15%), commerce (14.2%), services (21.4%), and construction
(8.6%).
Ecology
Our decisive commitment to the mainterance of a clean environment, has contributed
to a visually attractive image and healthy living and working conditions. Outstanding
measures have been taken regarding the improvment in the quality of the water, including
a network of monitoring stations, regular sampling, and the opening in 1993 of a
plant for the treatment of sewer water, with the second largest capacity nation.
Education and Culture
With a literacy rate higher than the national average, Aguascalientes can be favorably
compared to many of the most advanced nations in the world. Six institutions of higher
education offer university and technological careers to over 8,000 students, and
teaching careers to more than 10,000. The educational system includes programs for
adult education and for persons with pysical or mental disabilities. The state government
has undertaken special mechanisms for worker training, aimed at providing its labor
force with the necessary skills to be competitive in the new technologies.
Aware of the decisive role of culture in human development, our society has taken
great strides toward the promotion of cultural events and facilites. The Aguascalientes
Cultural Institutes is actively engaged in fostering public participation in dance,
music, art, and theater programs. The functional and modern Teatro de Aguascalientes
was built in 1992 on a twelve-acre lot; its main building is an architectural landmark
which seats 1,620 spectators and features art exhibits, plays, music concerts, and
other cultural events on a regular basis. City museums display remnants of a colonial
past and testimonies of old and new trend-setting artists.
